As per a source; and thereby current working theory:
Rafales were forced off encrypted comms, making them fallback to VHF/UHF links. This is likely because of EW which likely put gibberish on their frequencies.
This was a classic downgrading hack that requires no extra step. The downgraded communication was sniffed over air (SDR).
